VIA RD 2: Newest Food Hub Offering Variety of Quality Food at Economical Prices

By: Sourav

This monsoon is a blessing for Hyderabad and a bliss for foodies. The city welcomed VIA RD 2, the latest food hub, to its culinary landscape. Via Rd 2 is a promising hub of multiple restaurants including Vengamamba Tiffins, Pondy Parottas, Vaishnavi Foods, Ahobilam Foods, Sardarji’s Dhaba, Drunken Monkey, Hazzel Ice Cream Café, Wok This Way and Brewsta Coffee offering an incredible array of gastronomic choices from North India to South India, from breakfast to late night dinner, from street food to traditional food, from pastime snacks to refreshing beverages.

Adjacent to Cream Stone outlet opposite KBR Park, VIA RD 2 has enlivened Road No. 2, Banjara Hills, where there are few restaurants. So variety of food and economical dining were limited until the launch of VIA RD 2. Long operating hours (from early morning till late night), variety of food, pocket-friendly pricing, attentive service and take away are the highlights of VIA RD 2.

I visited VIA RD 2 for food tasting on the rainy afternoon yesterday and returned early in the evening. The tasting started with non-veg starters from Wok This Day. It was difficult to make choices from a huge menu of soups, noodles, rice and seafood in either veg or non-veg categories. Finally, Cornflake Chicken, Chicken Manchurian and Chilli Chicken Pakoda were decided on. Each of them was as good as we usually like. They were served with different chutneys to tease the taste buds.

Vengamamba Tiffins was the next to serve the foodie in me at VIA RD 2. Sitting close to the counter of Vengamamba Tiffins, I couldn’t help craving a few bites of dosa and a few spoons of South Indian veg rice on a monsoon day. I chose to have Masala Rava Dosa and Palak Paneer Dosa. Served with pure ghee, erra karam, curry leave flakes, sambar, coconut chutney and tomato gravy, both varieties were yummy. The sambar scored the highest. It was a pure delight!

My taste of paratha would have been limited to aloo, gobi, peas, onion and sattu parathas if there were no counter of Pondy Parottas at VIA RD 2. The menu of Pondy Parottas boasts a variety of parottas from South Indian (especially Pondicherry), Sri Lankan and Arabian cuisines. Mutton Egg Kheema Kothu and Chicken Lappa were my choices for tasting. Both were so delicious that I felt very active on a lazy rainy afternoon. This is what I would like to explore more at VIA RD 2.

The next encounter was with the Andhra cuisine offered by Ahobilam Foods at VIA RD 2. It serves idly, dosa, wada, pesarattu, upma, roti and rice made of organic millets. A bowl of Millet Pulihora with thick curd and a bowl of Millet Ragi Sankati with sambar, chutney hit the table for tasting. Both were well cooked and perfect for casual, light-hearted dining.

I was full by the time the food tasting session reached Sardarji’s Dhaba. Sardarji’s Dhaba specializes in offering various North Indian chaats, Mumbai street food and traditional Punjabi dishes like stuffed parathas and lassi. Still Punjabi Chole Bhature on the menu tempted the foodie in me, who knows no full stop. Bhatura was crispy but not much fluppy. Chole was quite dry. It should have had some gravy. Besides I had some Aloo Tikki chaat which was good. Soon I will revisit VIA RD 2 for Punjabi Samosa and Kachori.

If you are in no mood for food, you can refresh your mood with a glass of smoothie from Drunken Monkey or sweeten your day with Hazzel Ice Cream, or energise yourself with a cup of Araku Coffee or Filter Coffee or Tea (five different flavors) from Brewsta Coffee at VIA RD 2. Luckily I made two good choices: Monkey Confidential (beverage) from Drunken Monkey and Honey Nut Crunch (honey flavored French Vanilla Ice cream with almonds, cashews and butterscotch crunchies).

A ‘large’ cup (the other is regular) of Hazzel Ice Cream comes with so generous quantity that two people can happily share it. Interestingly, a large portion is priced a little more than a regular one.

The counter of Vaishnavi Foods was closed. It will open this week. My colleagues and I are happy to get such a multi-restaurant food hub at a stone’s throw from our office on Road No 2, where we can order food from and spend some time over Chinese starters or South Indian snacks or North Indian chaats during breaks.
