Movies to be Screened at Hyderabad Bengali Film Festival 2015

By: Sourav

The breathless waiting to know which Bengali movies will be screened at Hyderabad Bengali Film Festival 2015 is over as the group, Bengalis in Hyderabad, has unveiled the final list. HBFF was initiated in 2014, with the purpose of connecting the Bengalis in Hyderabad with Bengali Cinema and introducing the culture of Bengal to other communities. The success of the fest in the opening year gave a push to organize the second edition with more care and enthusiasm. Evidently, the HBFF promises to be an absolute entertainer and a better cultural extravaganza this year. The list of movies for screening at HBFF 2015 is a blend of Bengali art films and commercial potboilers, including a film on Rabindranath Tagore’s personal life and a film on one of his novels. SliceofRealLife got in touch with the ‘Bengalis in Hyderabad’ group to share the final list of movies and some interesting details to pique your interest. Do hold on your breath to know why you should attend the HBFF 2015 at any cost.

Hyderabad Bengali Film Festival, Bengali art films, Kadambari bengali movie

Kadambari by Suman Ghosh explores the Nobel laureate Rabindranath Tagore’s relationship with his sister-in-law, Kadambari Devi, in those times when the women of aristocratic families were veiled from the public view. One of the latest releases, this Bengali art film is an untold story of Rabindranath Tagore, who portrayed human life, relationship and psychology in numerous different shades. For the first time, the flamboyance of the inner world of Jorasanko Thakurbari and the nuances of relationship among the members of the Tagore family, have been captured on celluloid. Konkona Sen Sharma plays Kadambari opposite Parambrata Chattarjee’s Rabindranath Tagore.

Hyderabad Bengali film festival, Teenkahon bengali movie, bengali art films of 2015

Bauddhayan Mukherjee’s Teenkahon (Three Obsessions) is an epic tale of love, lust and betrayal over hundred years of life in Bengal. Described as a “rare international art house film” by The Gulf Today, Teenkahon is a social document in reel adapted from a story by Bibhutibhushan Mukhopadhyay and Syed Mustafa Siraj. The film depicts the changing face of Bengal, with focus on gradual degeneration of values and erosion of social fabric, over a span of 100 years. Teenkahon to be screened at Hyderabad Bengali Film Festival is worth watching for not only its multifaceted story but its stellar cast including Rituparna Sengupta, Dhritiman Chatterjee, Sabyasachi Chakraborty, Joy Sengupta, Kaushik Mukherjee, Ananya Sen and others.

Nirbaak Bengali movie story, films by Srijir Mukherjee

The latest masterpiece from Srijit Mukherjee’s repertoire, Nirbaak is a metaphorical mélange of four love stories interconnected by a single woman that Sushmita Sen plays. Each of the love stories is steeped in silence which is the most eloquent part of the narrative. Nirbaak portrays the kind of love which is impalpable to the ordinary eyes and inexpressible in the common human language. It explores different manifestations of love – lust, jealousy, affection and separation – unique to human existence.

Chotoder Chobi Bengali movie, Hyderabad Bengali film festival,

Chotoder Chobi by Kaushik Ganguly is a slice of real life. This Bengali movie reveals social apathy towards the misery of dwarfs who make their ends meet by entertaining society at cost of their own discomfiture as clowns in circuses. The portrayal of dwarfs who are often laughed at as butts of ridicule for their inability to scale the normal height of mentally abnormal people makes Chotoder Chobi a must watch at Hyderabad Bengali Film Festival 2015.

novels by Rabindranath Tagore, Jogajog Bengali Movie story, Bengali art films

Another irresistible attraction of Hyderabad Bengali Film Festival 2015 is Sekhar Das’ Jogajog, based on the classic novel of the same name by Rabindranath Tagore, the Bard of Bengal. The film penetrates a confined world of aristocracy where women are subjugated by patriarchy, exploited in the name of marriage, and pawned for the sake of family reputation. Jogajog is a multilayered story of marital rape, marital incompatibility, extra-marital affair, and social injustice to women. The leading cast of Jogajog includes Bratya Basu, Ananya Chatterjee, Arjun Chakraborty, and Locket Chatterjee.

Nirbashito Bengali Film story, Hyderabad Bengali Film festival 2015, Churni Ganguly

Churni Ganguly’s directorial debut Nirbashito (Banished) is the most talked-about and powerful movie among the finalists for the 2nd edition of Hyderabad Bengali Film Festival this year. An eminent Bengali actress, Churni Ganguly herself plays the protagonist, an author in exile, and cinematically portrays a part of the latter’s life. Nirbashito bagged the ‘Best Bengali Film’ award at the 62nd National Film Awards this year. Needless to say, there is no Bengali in Hyderabad who would miss the screening of Nirbashito.

family album bengali movie, films by mainak bhaumik

The HBFF 2015 has also shortlisted Family Album, the latest of the films by Mainak Bhaumik, a young Bengali filmmaker for the Next Gen who deals with offbeat aspects of human life, relationship, existence and society in a light-hearted manner. Ironically titled ‘Family Album’, the film shows how the members of a family that looks perfect from outside pretend to be what they are not and hide their secrets to each other. Swastika Mukherjee and Paoli Dam play lesbian characters in Family Album.

Bitnoon Bengali movie,

The list of movies to be screened at Hyderabad Bengali Film Festival this year ends with Bitnoon, a comic family drama revolving around a married couple and their 6-year-old son. The apparently happy couple is too busy to have a few moments of togetherness. A third person’s unexpected entry in their world adds comic twists to the story, which promises to bring the house down.

If the much-awaited film festival begins with such serious art films as Nirbashito, Kadambari, and Teenkahon, it will end with Family Album and Bitnoon full of comical ingredients. All is well if the end is well! The festival will be held on June 26, 27 and 28.
