Review of Dan Sin Quin a Chinese restaurant in China Town Kolkata
What do you like the most about a restaurant? Is it menu, your favorite cuisine, ambience or the place itself? If it is the menu that you explore and the taste that love to come back with when you visit a new food haunt, then you are welcome to Dan Sin Quin, a Chinese & Thai restaurant in China Town, the thriving food hub of Kolkata. The extensive menu packing in lots of Chinese and Thai delicacies in different categories – starter, main dish, dessert, cocktail and mocktail – is the mainstay of Dan Sin Quin, owned by Ms Jagruti Mehta. And, how is the taste of the delicacies on offer? Some are yummy and others are yummier.
I visited the restaurant yesterday. Housed on the first floor of a building in China Town, this Kolkata Chinese restaurant offers the comfort of its air-conditioned interior, decorated after a Chinese theme and an eyeful of the open sky through the windows on the roadside front. Isn’t a lovely place to drop in for a winter special brunch? Ms Jagruti Mehta heartily welcomed me in and was all smiles while greeting me. The life-size statue of a Chinese goddess stole the show with me the moment I stepped in. I was offered a window-side cozy seat to sit on.
I took glimpses of the interior first and then went on exploring the menu. I am sure, you would love to give all the items a try instead of feeling spoilt for choice. As winter is the time for spicy hot soups, I felt itchy to check the list of Chinese and Thai soups in both veg and non-veg categories. I was surprised to see the variety. Here is the list to share with you:
For vegetarians –
Vegetable Coriander Clear / Thick soup
Spicy Vegetable Sweet Corn Soup
Vegetable Wanton Clear Soup
Spicy Tom Kha soup
Veg Mushroom Soup
Noodle Clear soup with tomatoes & bean curd
For non-vegetarians (Chicken and Prawn special)
Chicken Lemon Clear / Thick soup
Sea Food Coriander Thick soup
Spicy Sweet Corn Soup
Goong (prawn) Thai
Gai (chicken) Thai
As it is not possible to go on tasting all the items on the menu in a day, I selected five delicacies: Veg Mushroom Soup, Veg Spring roll, Chinese Hodgepodge, Tai Corn Cake and Ice cream with toffee walnut. The first three items rank high on the health index because of their nutritionally rich content. Cooked with chopped slices of fresh winter vegetables including cauliflower, tomato, capsicum, carrot, etc, the soup, the hodgepodge and the spring role satisfied my taste for something healthy. Thai Corn Cake and Ice cream with toffee walnut are what I found the most delicious. The moment I bit a slice of the corn cake, it melted in the mouth leaving me to crave for more. If you have a sweet tooth for desserts, these are a must try at Dan Sin Quin.
How Dan Sin Quin is different from other restaurants in China Town
Dan Sin Quin stands out with some special delights on its menu. Spinach Cheese Spring Roll, Thai Spring Roll, Crispy Chilly American Corn and Stuffed Mushrooms are some of the special items available only here. “You won’t find them anywhere in China Town. These are my finds,” says Jagruti Mehta with pride. More, the service quality and careful attendants are the other plus points.
Apart from the sprawling space for the culinary entertainment of families, Dan Sin Quin offers private space for soirees, get-togethers, business meetings and conferences. The restaurant is all set to entertain guests with a special menu in the remaining few days of December 2012. Whenever you visit the restaurant, make sure to take a bite of Thai Corn Cake. It is my recommendation.
