Women are safe from gays
By: Sourav
Discriminating men from and women, the haves from the haves not, the literate from the illiterate has been a common practice in the rural backwaters of India, since time immemorial. Innocent people have been discriminated against on grounds of caste, religion, gender, social order and profession. Women are still victims of discrimination on ground of infertility in many a part of rural India. Now, sexual orientation is the newest base of discrimination in the present decade. Discrimination against homosexuals is being encouraged by the home ministry labeling homosexuality as “immoral”.
Discrimination against people on any ground is a crime against humanity. The ministry lacks a common sense that one does not wish to be gay, or being gay is not a fashion. It is genetically encoded. It is a natural biological phenomenon, not a trendy outfit to wear for the sake of a change in appearance. Instead of supporting the gay community to live a life of dignity and creating a space for them in the society of straight people, the ministry is calling homosexuality a disease “against social order” and seeking a ban on it, arguing that the practices common in foreign countries should not be imitated in India.
If homosexuality is a foreign practice, aren’t such practices prevalent in Indian metropolises as live-together, free sex, pre-marital sex, nudity in the reel, bachelor parties and nightlife culture borrowed from western countries? If yes, why not ban those? According to a feature published by The Telegraph India on July 31, 2011, homosexuals face discrimination at workplace and are made fun of at social gatherings. Isn’t it enough? Such impulsive remarks made by the home ministry will surely motivate the society’s biased attitude against the gay.
The home ministry should focus on the increasing number of rape cases in the capital cities of India. Delhi has already been tagged “the capital of rapists”. This heinous crime against women is on the rise in Kolkata and other parts of West Bengal. “Woman alleges rape during train heist” and “Cop accused of rape at gunpoint” are among the headlines on Sunday Times today (February 26, 2012). Not gays but the straight are committing this wicked social crime. Evidently, women are safe from gays.
